Featured displays:
- American Indian beadwork and porcupine quillwork including clothing, bags, ceremonial regalia, utilitarian objects, horse gear, dolls and missionary items. Tribes represented in historic quillwork and beadwork displays include the following: Sioux, Meti, Chippewa-Ojibway, and Plains Cree.
- Pulitzer prize winning author Hamlin Garland's Middle Border history exhibits from 1600 A.D. to 1939 A.D. featuring the settlement of North and South Dakota and portions of adjoining states.
- Four art galleries (Oscar Howe, Leland Case, Charles Hargens, and changing exhibits) feature original works by Oscar Howe, Harvey Dunn, Charles Hargens, James Earle Fraser, Gutzon Borglum and others. Changing exhibits gallery features one person shows, emphasizing American Indian artists of the Northern Plains.
- The building complex includes Farwell country church; Sheldon country school; Beckwith House (1885 Italianate home with Victorian furnishings); and Dimock, South Dakota depot.
